Torah School, Grades 8 and 9
Our post-b’nai mitzvah students have many ways to continue their involvement: through our youth group, MoFTY, as student teachers, and in our Confirmation program.
The Confirmation class is a two year program in grades 8 and 9. As a group, students will choose what they would like to study from a list of possible topics, including ethical dilemmas, current events, the Holocaust, Jewish and personal identity, comparative religion, and Israel and the Middle East. Students will have the opportunity to synthesize all that they have learned throughout their years at Temple and to continue with their own ongoing development of Jewish identity and faith. The students in Grades 8 and 9 historically have studied the origins of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust in preparation for leading the school-wide observance of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Grade 9 culminates in the ceremony of Confirmation on the festival of Shavuot. Prior to the Confirmation service, the students meet with Rabbis Grushcow and Kowalski to reflect on the meaning of Confirmation, plan the service and write their personal statements.
